“Very disappointing and over-priced”
We've been a couple of times to the Babylonian in the Night Market - a fairly authentic range of Iraqi cuisine - so decided to try the new branch in the Maya Shopping Mall. This is a very different proposition, the Night Market branch being aimed, so the proprietor(?) told us, aimed at Middle Eastern customers and the new Maya outlet at a more general, tourist audience.
The first time we went, we were not too impressed. We ordered two dishes to share - one a curry and one a different dish - with rice. The curry arrived, but no rice. We were promised rice would come, but our curry was getting cold, so we ate that, without rice. Far too much salt had been put in the curry. The rice arrived later and finally our second dish arrived, a bland and unexciting dish, to be eaten with now "cool" rice.
Deciding that we should allow for "opening glitches" we visited a few weeks later and decided to try the buffet. The overwhelming impression was of at best lukewarm food, not helped by the fact that the dishes were very shallow. The meat dishes had very little meat in them, mostly sauce, and everything was rapidly cold. We ordered some kebabs - shown in a cold cabinet sitting in cold sauce - which were heated up, but given to a different table, and I suspect we received somebody else's food.
The service was execrable. Drinks were ordered and never delivered, others in or party ordered food which did not appear or when it did appear was the wrong dish. The whole place felt more like Fawlty Towers.
The prices charged for this very poor quality food were very high, and we will not be returning. By giving it 2 stars, I am being kind. The Night Market branch may be better, but we no longer feel like chancing that either.
“Babylonian at Maya - very good”
This is the third time we visited Babylonian at the Maya Shopping Center. We definitely like the food, which is a mix of Iraqi and north Indian cuisines. Interior is absolutely stunning with a royal palace look. Good to bring your special guest or if you are planning to go for a date. Employees are friendly . Price is little higher than other places. We spent around 400 bhat for two of us. Buffet costs 300฿ per person. But it does worth your money.
I really enjoyed the opportunity to have something different than Thai and Mediterranean. The location is great and I enjoyed the atmosphere. I went late evening so it wasn't crowded when I went, no complains about service. I had the Kayse, apricot curry with lamb and nuts which was very good.
